Edward's paternal grandparents, Johann Gessner and Amalia Liedt, were born in 1804 and 1823 respectively. They were married about 1844 in Polish Russia. Johann was an old class estate landowner who was a baker. Amalia died in 1890.

Wilomina was born in Reshevo, Poland. Her parents Paul Peter, who lived from 1843 to 1910, and Wilhelmina Litke, who lived from 1851 to 1923, were born in Warsaw, Poland.

Edward left Bremen, Germany on 20 February 1909 with his brother-in-law, Paul Peter, on the Gneisenau, and arrived in America on 3 March 1909. They stopped in Pittsburgh, PA to visit Karl Lowe. Edward lived briefly with Albert and Albertina Gessner at 2304 Lakeside Ave. in Cleveland, OH.
